Police today resorted to massive lathi-charge after an irate mob refused to withdraw road-blockade in protest of frequent power cut at the locality. The incident occurred at Khayertala village under Manikchak police station today.
Police arrested five persons and detained five others. A few two-wheelers were seized too.
It has been learnt from police sources that the habitants of Khayertala village blocked Malda-Najirpur state highway alleging prolonged load shedding at the locality. Owing to the blockade that lasted for over five hours a huge road congestion was caused and traffic came to a complete halt.
A large contingent of police rushed to the spot to lift the blockade. Officials of West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL) also arrived on spot to discuss the cause of the problems.
According to police, despite assurance to look into the matter and measures to solve the problems, the road-blockers refused to lift the blockade until the power supply got regularized.
Kunal Das, officer-in-charge of Manikchak police station said, “We were forced to resort to mild baton-charge to disperse the unruly mob who held the road blockade.''
Villagers, however, alleged that the police resorted to lathi-charge without any provocation.
