2-day protest by MNREGA employees from Apr 24

The members of MNREGA Employees Association, Andaman and Nicobar Islands will hold a two-day cease-work from April 24 to press for their long pending demand of wage revision. Major among the demands of the association include enhancement of pay packages of all categories of MNREGA staff, EPF benefits for MNREGA workers, annual increment of 5 percent, travelling and dearness allowance for MNREGA employees. The two-day peaceful protest will be held in front of the offices of the Deputy Commissioner of all the three districts. According to reports, some political parties and PRI members have also extended their support to the association.
The association had earlier submitted its memorandum of demands to the administration. According to the secretary of the association, currently, staff engaged on contract basis as Programme Officer, Assistant Engineer, Accountant, Data Entry Operator, Gram Rozgar Sevak and Technical Assistant are paid Rs 20,000, Rs 16,000, Rs 12,000, Rs 11,000, Rs 11,000 and Rs 11,000 respectively. On the contrary, employees working for another Central Sponsored Scheme, National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), have been benefited from wage revision at regular intervals. Further, the wages paid to different categories of employees under MNREGA is much that than that given to unskilled and high-skilled daily rated workers under the UT Administration effective from 1st January 2018. Repeated demands submitted by unions representing the workers have not being considered till date, said the Secretary.
