The sun was about to show up, when a bus belonging to SS Transport from Diglipur, on its way to Port Blair on Wednesday met with an accident and turned  upside down off the road and fell  into a shrub near Kadamtala.
The journey was as a normal one till 4.30 am when the bus reached theb  turn no.3 of Phooltala which comes under Kadamtala, when the driver lost control over the bus and the vehicle carrying hapless passengers skid and turned upside down by the wayside in the shrubs. Passengers were injured and trapped inside and were either screaming in pain or asking for help. One passenger could smell petrol and dreaded the bus might catch fire. Luckily it did not happen as was the case in a previous accident nearby a few weeks back. Many passing tourist vehicle drivers and office-goers  stopped by as Good Samaritans and pulled the passengers out, a lot of them women and children howling in fear and pain. The driver too sustained severe injuries and was bleeding profusely.
Health workers from PHC Kadamtala reached the spot to help the injured. Many police personnel joined the rescue operation immediately. The passengers were given refreshments by PRI members and the baggage of passengers was handed to Kadamtala Police Station officials. Three passengers were referred to GP pant Hospital, Port Blair, while other injured were taken to Kadamtala hospital by another bus. Police registered a case and investigation is on. But the injured passengers had to face official apathy soon, when the officer in-charge of Jirkatang out-post refused to allow injured passengers to travel towards Port Blair due to ‘non-convey hours,. He demanded medical certificates to the dismay of women in blood stained clothes and stitches on their bodies as they were not in an ambulance. They had to wait for the convey hours to commence in pain and distress. Many blamed it on the disastrous road conditions, some to mechanical snag and a few to the drunk driver. Well, we have to wait till the investigation is over.
