The rigors of the physical endurance tests for recruitment of labourers in the Department of Environment and Forest claimed the life of a young aspirant from the Karen Community of these islands on Friday. Saw Haley fainted while taking part in the 10 km walk in the morning heat as part of the physical tests, which was conducted at Diglipur recently. He was rushed to the nearby Health Centre from where he was shifted to Dr RP Hospital. The 22 year old resident of Burma Dera here was then referred to GB Pant Hospital. According to reports, Saw Haley died during treatment on Friday at GB Pant Hospital though the exact cause of the death is not yet clear.
“There were many aspirants who participated in the physical test for the post of labourers in the Forest Department. The Karen youth too aspired to serve the Forest Department and participated in the endurance test. While walking, Saw Haley suddenly stopped and collapsed. He was immediately rushed to the nearest hospital for treatment by the officials deployed for the recruitment drive,” said a Burma Dera resident. "Fate played a cruel joke on the aspirant as he was desperate for a government job to support his family,” he added.
