Lack of a blood sugar testing facility at a Primary Health Centre (PHC) is taking a toll on patients in and around Tugapur region in North Andaman. As per reports, the blood sugar machine at PHC Tugapur is under repairs for the past three months and needy patients from areas like Chainpur, Tugapur, Hanspuri, Webi, Bajota, Restcamp etc are forced to shell out huge money from their pockets hiring auto to travel to Dr RP Hospital at Mayabunder for check-ups.
“There are more than 2000 diabetes patients mostly elderly citizens from BPL and middle class families who visited PHC Tugapur for regular blood tests as the health centre is located less than 15 kms from their residences. However, after the testing machine developed some technical snag some three months ago, the patients are forced to travel more than 32 kilometers hiring an auto or jeep to the hospital at Mayabunder. Autowallahs are reaping huge profits owing to the deficiency in the health centre and charge more than Rs 200 from passengers for a one-way trip. The Health Department should take a note of the situation and ensure early repair of the blood testing machine in the interest of poor patients of the region,” said some Tugapur villagers.
