Major protest planned at Mayabunder on Feb 21

The headquarter region of North and Middle Andaman, Mayabunder is set to witness a major protest march on the 21st of this month. In the agitation notice served to concerned authorities in the administration, almost all Merchant Associations, Jeep and Autorickshaw Unions, Cargo Association, Ranchi Association, Danapur Shopkeepers Association, PRI members and villagers accused the administration of keeping the headquarter region of the district deprived of basic facilities for decades.
“Despite being declared a separate district more than a decade ago, the headquarters of the district, Mayabunder is grappling with lack of basic amenities. While the pace of development in other district have picked up, residents in different parts of Mayabunder are still deprived of basic facilities such as health, power, communication, transportation sports etc. Some major demands raised in the agitation notice include improvement in health services at Dr RP Hospital, Mayabunder, deployment of Super Specialists, experienced technicians, Gynaecologist, Radiologist, Sonologist, Orthopaedic Surgeons etc, installation of Standby Power Generator at Mayabunder to ensure 24x7 power, improvement in BSNL services, resumption of services by MV Coral Queen, development of playground at Pokkadera, regular supply of LPG refills, salary hike for MNREGA workers, manual issuance of STS bus tickets and introduction of Examination Centre at Mayabunder for common recruitment drives,” said Mr Abdul Siddique, former Pramukh of Mayabunder.
