Upset over recurring breakdown in telecom services, villagers of remote Karmatang in North Andaman have decided to hold a peaceful protest in front of the BSNL office at Mayabunder this month. Demanding installation of an additional mobile tower at Karmatang RV, PRI members and villagers of Karmatang, in a representation submitted to the Deputy Commissioner of North and Middle Andaman District recently, said that remote hamlets in the region have remained a victim of official apathy for the past many months.
“Non-availability of mobile networks leaves us in a state of distress during natural disasters. Flash floods after incessant rains, uprooting of trees, road blockade often occur in Karmatang area particularly during rainy seasons and in the absence of mobile network, villagers are left cut off from the rest of the region. People are left helpless as they are left with no means to inform about the situation to the concerned authorities in the administration. Some employees of BSNL have informed that installation of a temporary mobile antenna at Karmatang RV can solve the problem till installation of a permanent mobile tower,” said villagers in the representation urging the Deputy Commissioner to take up the concerns with the BSNL authorities.
