DTC offers free ride to women on Bhai Dooj

Women in the city will be able to travel for free in the buses of Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) on the occasion of Bhai Dooj on October 21.

According to the DTC, free ride will be provided in both AC and non-AC low floor buses in the Delhi-NCR region from 8 am to 10 pm on Saturday. The corporation provides free ride to women passengers on Bhai Dooj every year. It has also made sufficient arrangements to manage the rush of passengers on the day. "Keeping in view the heavy rush of commuters on Bhai Dooj, adequate number of traffic supervisory staff will be deployed to help the commuters," an official of the DTC said.
"We have an e-wallet account where we receive contributions for purchasing firecrackers. This time I got donations above Rs 1.5 lakh...," he said, attributing the overwhelming contributions to the "public anger" on the "selective ban". He also asked if those who filed public interest litigation (PIL) for a ban on firecrackers during Diwali would be doing so during New Year celebrations. According to the court, its ban order for this year during Diwali was an experiment to examine its effect on the pollution level in the region.

In its October 9 order, the apex court had said its last month's order, temporarily lifting the stay and permitting sale of firecrackers, would be made effective only from November 1, 12 days after the festival of lights. It, however, said Diwali would not be "cracker-free" in Delhi-NCR as people would burst firecrackers which they had purchased before the ban order.
