A Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP today urged the Union government to celebrate 100 years of Rabindranath Tagore's book on nationalism, considering the prevailing situation in the country.
Raising the issue in the Lok Sabha, TMC MP Sugata Bose said Tagore's idea of nationalism must be celebrated when "engines of coercion are snuffing out lives of people" in the name of nationalism, in an apparent reference to incidents of lynchings. Talking about Tagore's idea of nationalism, Bose said the government should celebrate 100 years of his book, 'Nationalism', a collection of essays on the issue that was published in 1917. "We must celebrate 100 years of the famous book," he said.
Bose also welcomed Union HRD minister Prakash Javadekar's comments that the government had no plan to remove the writings of Tagore from school textbooks. There was a report that RSS-affiliated Shiksha Sanskriti Utthan Nyas headed by Dina Nath Batra in its recommendations to National Council of Educational Research and Training had suggested removal of works of Tagore from school textbooks.
