Tributes paid to Rajiv Gandhi on 26th death anniversary

President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice- President M Hamid Ansari, Congress president Sonia Gandhi along with her family today paid floral tributes to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 26th death anniversary.

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi along with his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and brother-in-law Robert Vadra laid flowers and wreaths at the Rajiv Gandhi memorial 'Vir Bhumi' here. Rahul tweeted: "Remembering my father today. A leader driven by love, compassion and a deep generosity of heart. We miss him."

The programme was also attended by Chandra Kant Dubey, the representative of Congress vice president MLC Dipak Singh, the party's district unit chief Yogendra Mishra among others. Congress activists highlighted Gandhi's contribution to transform the country as modern India by introducing the use of computers.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee paid tribute her tribute and said: she would always remember the shock and pain of his "untimely demise"."On this day in 1991, we lost a great leader...This is a day I would never forget. The shock and pain over his untimely demise will always remain in my mind," Mamata Banerjee posted on a social media website.

Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated on this day in 1991 in a suicide bomb attack by Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) during an election rally at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu. He served as the Prime Minister from October 31, 1984, to December 2, 1989.
