Sheila Dikshit, the Congress face for the chief ministership of Uttar Pradesh is likely to be sacrificed on the alter of demonetisation decision of Narendra Modi. The Congress leadership, in the aftermath of Rahul Gandhi’s corruption blitzkrieg against the Prime Minister is likely to drop Sheila Dikshit as its face in Uttar Pradesh.  The thinking in the Congress leadership is that Sheila Dikshit should not be the Congress face in UP as her name too figures in the Sahara list claiming that money was paid to six chief ministers.  Besides then Gujarat CM   Modi,  Chhattisgarh CM Raman Singh, MP CM Shivraj Singh Chauhan,  the name of even  then CM of Delhi Sheila Dikshit is also here. All these chief ministers are accused of getting money from Sahara and Rahul has made this a big issue against the PM. The thinking in the leadership is that if Sheila continues as the party’s  CM face, then Rahul’s corruption agenda against the BJP and the PM in particular will be blunted as she too is accused of the same charges. Sheila herself has not been very happy with the Congress leadership particularly with Rahul Gandhi and has been quite critical, of late, of his working style. She is on record saying that Rahul is immature. Her unhappiness emanates from the fact that all through the campaign, she has been sidelined. Despite being the CM face of the party, it was Rahul initially who led the campaign and the rest was done by either the Congress general secretary Ghulam Nabi Azad or the UPCC chief Raj Babbar.  Sheila has been missing from practically all the events organised in UP. But the big question being asked is that if Sheila Dikshit is dropped, then what happens to the Brahmin card of the congress.

The election of the president and the vice president will take place soon after the assembly elections in  five states including Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. A search has already been mounted for Pranab Mukherjee and Hamid Ansari’s successor. Hectic lobbying has already begun. While the RSS wants someone with the RSS leanings, the Prime Minister is said to be open to someone from outside the RSS and the BJP also. It is being said he is not even averse to giving a second term to Pranab Mukherjee.  But that would only be in case he fails to evolve a consensus within the BJP and the RSS on his chosen persons. If Modi  would have his way, then he would prefer a non- political person or somebody from outside the BJP.. Among the names making the  rounds are of Amitabh Bachchan and believe it or not Mulayam Singh Yadav.  Mulayam who had been nursing the ambition of becoming the PM candidate, has now set his heart on the post of the President. RSS is pushing Venkaiah Naidu or Sushma Swaraj for the President’s position

Najeeb Jung, who recent resigned Lt Governor of Delhi, triggered speculation on why did he do so. If one goes by the buzz then Najeeb Jung has been asked by the Prime Minister to resign on the promise that he will be made the Vice-President. Jung who was a UPA appointee had been playing footie to the NDA government by giving the elected chief minister Arvind Kejriwal a difficult time ad keeping him on tenterhooks. (IPA)
