32 booked for violation of Legal Metrology Rules

The Enforcement Wing of the Directorate of Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs under the supervision Mr Rajesh Kumar, Asst. Controller (LM) along with Mr Nitin Biswas and Smt. Shahida Banu, Civil Supplies Inspectors, conducted surprise raids in the Fish/Vegetable Markets situated at Junglighat on Thursday and at Bathu Basthi and Mohanpura recently.
During inspection, it was noticed that 32 Shop keepers were using unstamped weighing & measuring instruments which is an offence committed under the Legal Metrology (Enforcement) Rules, 2011 and 2 shop keepers were found violating the provisions of the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011. All the offenders have been booked under appropriate provisions of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 and the Rules framed under this Act.
So far 18 offenders have appeared before the Assistant Controller, Legal Metrology to get their offences compounded and an amount of Rs. 36,000/- (Rupees Thirty six thousand only) has been realized from them as compounding fee. The remaining 14 suspected offenders have been summoned to appear before the Assistant Controller (LM) to get their offence compounded vide compounding notice issued to all concerned to appear within 7 days, failing which action shall be initiated exparte.
Further, all the traders and vendors have been advised to refrain from any unfair trade practices and get their Weighing and Measuring instruments duly verified and stamped as required under law. It is appealed to all the consumers that in case of any complaints regarding violation in weights & measures may be brought to notice in writing to the Directorate of Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, Port Blair.
