While there has been a sharp rise in cases of elderly parents being abandoned, betrayed by their families in the country, the remote Andaman and Nicobar Islands too seem to not lag behind in this inhuman practice. Early morning hours on Monday, a newspaper delivery boy noticed a lean old man lying unconscious and naked in the premises of the State Transport Bus Terminus. He immediately gave him water and brought some food from his residence nearby and then called the ambulance for help. This 88 year old man, named Paresh Chander Bepari, is a resident of Khudirampur, Diglipur having two daughters and a son, all of whom appear to have discarded their father in his twilight.
It was this humble newspaper distributor boy who came to the rescue of this 88 year old. “Initial medical examination revealed that he was suffering from extreme low pressure. He didn’t have food for the past few days and is unable to recall how he reached Port Blair. At GB Pant Hospital, they don’t admit patients without any attenders, as such I am now taking care of  the old man. He is now recuperating. I can only plead the family members of this 88 year old to come here and take care of him, who nourished them throughout his life and now struggling at this old age,” said the paper boy.
