The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), A & N Islands, has demanded setting up of a Central University named after Veer Savarkar in these islands and called upon the administration to issue a white paper in this regard. Speaking to scribes on Sunday, Omkar Pareda of the ABVP said that a nine-point charter of demands pertaining to problems being faced by college students in these islands was submitted to the Chief Secretary in September last year, but till date the administration has failed to take concrete steps to resolve the concerns.
“We demanded 24-hour power supply in college premises and hostel facilities across these islands so that the academic activities of students are not affected by power-cuts. The demand for appointment of Spokespersons in all departments in the college institutions here in consultation with the Union Public Service Commission has also not been fulfilled as yet. Other demands raised by the Parishad include providing basic infrastructure in the Girls Hostel of Jawaharlal Nehru Rajkeeya Mahavidyalaya, Wi-Fi facility in all college premises and conduct of college elections as per the guidelines of the Apex Court,” said Mr Pareda. Mr Nikhil Das, Ms Anindita Biswas, Sandeep Debnath and Pradeep Chakraborty, office bearers of ABVP were also present on the occasion.
Students of Dr BR Ambedkar Institute of Technology here too are faced with a plethora of problem. The Parishad brought up the concerns with the Principal of the Institute and a 14-point charter of demands was submitted. Office bearers of ABVP are scheduled to meet the Principal of DBRAIT this evening and if the meeting fails to find out a resolution to the problems, ABVP will hold widespread agitations soon, informed Mr Pareda.
