Admn salutes women power on International Women’s Day

Along with the rest of the globe, International Women’s Day was celebrated befittingly in these islands on Thursday. The Department of Social Welfare, Andaman and Nicobar Administration, organized a series of programmes across the territory to celebrate the day. The Secretary, Social Welfare, Smt Rashmi Singh, was the chief guest of the event organized here at Arunoudaya, which was also graced by the Chairperson of State Social Welfare Board, Dr Poonam Arora. Prominent women personalities of these islands were invited to celebrate the day, which remembers women’s contribution to the uplifting of other women and the society.
Highlighting the importance of International Women’s Day, Smt Rashmi Singh, said that the entire nation is proud of the achievements of women from different sections of live. The theme chosen for the celebration this year is aimed at encouraging women to raise voice for their rights and promote growing global movement to support gender parity, she said. She also lauded the efforts of the Chairperson, State Social Welfare Board for the novel initiatives planned for implementation under the flagship ‘Beti Bachao – Beti Padhao’ scheme in collaboration with the Social Welfare Department. Smt Singh released a book titled “Tinka Tinka Dasna” authored by Ms Vartika Nanda, Founder Tinka as also launched a portal Shakti Abhivakti on the occasion.
In her address, Dr Poonam Arora, Chairperson, State Social Welfare Board briefed about the skill development programme under Beti Bachao Beti Padao scheme. Around 20 girls from Car Nicobar, Teresa, Campbell Bay etc has been selected for training in traditional craft, coconut shell handicraft, advance designing of Nicobari Mat, apparels and development of marketing linkages, etc. Woman journalists from the local media fraternity were conferred with Abhivyakti Awards in recognition of their contribution towards the society.
