Agromet bulletin for farmers

The Central Island Agricultural Research Institute here has released the agromet bulletin for farmers for the period from Feb 25 to March 1, 2017. In the bulletin, CIARI forecast partly cloudy weather in the next five days. No rainfall in South Andaman, no rainfall in North and Middle Andaman and in Nicobar Island 5 mm of rainfall is expected during the period. The maximum temperature will be 30 to 31 oC with minimum temperature of 23 to 24 oC, whereas the maximum and minimum relative humidity is expected to be in the range of 71 to 76 % and 62 to 74 %, respectively in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Wind speed of 13 to 28 kmph is expected from North Easterly direction.
Farmers in Andaman region have been advised to deploy pheromone traps and light traps @ 4/acre in tomato to attract the fruit borer adult moths as the weather is conducive for growth of this pest, remove the shoot and fruit borer infested portion in brinjal and destroy it, make small basin around the gourds (Bottle gourd, Pumpkin, Snake gourd etc) and use drip to supply required water and keep the pig inside shed and provide cool drinking water to avoid heat stress. In Nicobar, farmers have been advised to clear the crown of coconut tree and remove the old bunches to avoid the attack of rhinoceros beetles and keep the pig inside shed and provide cool drinking water to avoid heat stress.
