Artistes from islands, mainland create colourful cultural fusion

The five-day Island Tourism & Cultural Festival-2018 concluded with a valedictory function held in the Govt. Girl’s Sr. Sec. School auditorium on Sunday. The Lt. Governor, Admiral DK Joshi PVSM, AVSM, YSM, NM, VSM (Retd.) was the chief guest of the function. The Chief Secretary, A&N Administration, Mr Anindo Majumdar was the guest of honour. The Lt. Governor expressed gratitude to all participating departments for making the festival a grand success. He said that this year, the festival was of a different format and many new activities were added to make it more eventful. The Lt. Governor suggested that the festival be included not only in the Islands Calendar of Events, but should also be widely published in other parts of the country.
The Lt. Governor further stated that the objective behind organising the ITF in a new venue was primarily to set up more stalls and added attractions. He was also of the opinion that based on the suggestions to be received from all quarters, the Administration should strive to organise the event in a much better way next year. The Lt. Governor gave away Certificates of Appreciation to the participating Departments and Cultural groups on the occasion. They included A&N Police, APWD, Electricity, Education, Sports, Industries, Transport, PBMC, ANIIDCO, ZSI, AYUSH, Shipping Services etc. The visiting artists including the kite maker Mr Jamaluddin, Cultural Troupes from SZCC and EZCC and Lakshadweep, Mr P. Durga Prasad, designer of the Mascot, ‘Duggu’ were also felicitated.
The Director (Tourism), Mr Amit Anand while presenting the report on the five-day activities, which were conducted during the festival, informed that various new events were added to draw attraction from all corners including tourists and visiting artistes. Water sports, traditional sports events, kite making and kite flying, Puppet Show, Nicobarese Canoe racing were among the attractive activities that drew large crowd, he said. Apart from this, Flower Show, Baby Show, Pet Animal Show, Bird Watching etc were organized during the festival, he mentioned. To promote local artisans in show casing their products, flea market was also organized. For the first time, AYUSH Hospital participated in the festival by putting up stall The highlight of the closing ceremony was the enchanting performances by local as well as artistes from mainland dressed in colourful costumes.
