For budding sportspersons, nothing is worse than being ignored by their own people. This is what happened to about 280 sportspersons from various schools from Car Nicobar, Campbell Bay and Nancowry who are camping at the ITF ground here. After reaching here from outer islands to participate in the State School Games to be held at Netaji Stadium from 10th January 2019, these school students are kept in a appalling condition in the ITF ground, VIP Road. These athletes are here since Tuesday to participate in the school games.
This Correspondent on Wednesday visited the ITF ground to see the conditions, which the young sportspersons are put up with, found the athletes living in awful conditions without even the basic amenities like drinking water, poor quality of food served, no proper beds and lack of health facilities. With no safety nets to protect from mosquitoes, sportspersons accommodated in the open stalls at the ITF ground have become vulnerable to vector borne diseases. Two of them have even fallen ill owing to the terrible living conditions.
About 89 students from Car Nicobar, 96 students from Campbell Bay and 91 students from Nancowry are camping at the ITF ground to participate in the State School Games to be held from 10th to 14th January at Netaji Stadium from the nine zones of the islands. While girl students accommodated in the girl hostel are getting better comforts, male students are kept at the ITF ground with minimum basic facilities. More students are likely to visit here from outer Islands to participate in the sports meet.
