CIARI stresses need for fresh water fish cultivation in A & N

The ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (CIARI) her conducted a training programme on “Better Management Practices (BMPs) for Island Aquaculture” under the NSPAAD project at Sippighat Gram Panchayat today. The training was conducted under the guidance of Dr. A. Kundu, Director, ICAR-CIARI and inaugurated by Shri. Vincent R Walter, Pradhan, Sippighat. The chief guest emphasised the demand and market potential of freshwater fishes in Andaman Islands and appreciated the efforts of ICAR-CIARI for imparting training to the farmers.
Dr. K. Saravanan, Scientist elaborated about various aspects of the training programme and emphasized upon fish feed and health management measures. Dr. S. Murugesan, Senior Technical Officer enumerated the steps involved in fish pond preparation and stocking of quality fish seeds. Methods to quantify water quality parameters were demonstrated to the farmers. Various queries raised by the farmers were also addressed by the experts. Fish farmers from Sippighat, Bimblitan, Dhannikhari, Humphrygunj and Kalapathar attended the training programme.
