The Animal Science Division of Central Island Agricultural Research Institute here organized Training cum Field day on the topic “To improve livestock productivity through fodder production in A & N islands”.  Twenty five farmers from Indira Nagar, an adopted  villages of Animal Science division participated in the programme. The training programme was organized at Indira Nagar Village on 25th July by the Scientist of Animal Science division and KVK Resource persons. Dr M.S. Kundu Course Director in his welcome address briefly gave an overview about the role of fodder in livestock rearing to increase the livestock productivity. Dr Nagesh Ram, Senior Scientist cum Head KVK and Dr. D. Bhattacharya explained different aspect of dairying to the farmers. The other scientists of the division delivered lecture on importance of fodder in reproductive health management.
On July 26, the farmers were brought to ICAR- CIARI main campus  to show them  standing fodder crops which have been  cultivated in the different tropography; including cultivation in the shaded area. They were explained different characteristics of the fodder; and brought attention about the variation among different varieties of fodder. The farmers took the weight of the fodder in the field. After taking weight of the fodder the farmers were assisted to calculate the requirement of the fodder per cow per year.  They were also convinced that it is possible to maintain a cow by cultivating fodder only in an area of 200 square meters in plain land and 600 square meters in plantation area. This will enable to supply 20 kg fodder per cow per day, throughout the year. The farmers were given demonstration about the chaff cutting machine, for better utilization of fodder and reduction of the wastage.
This was followed by the interaction with the scientists of the Animal Science Division. The scientists answered all the questions raised by the farmers related to livestock and poultry. The farmers in the feedback session opined that it was an eye opener for them, and they came to know a lot about fodder cultivation. They also expressed their confidence about cultivation of fodder for rearing the dairy animals. The Director ICAR- CIARI, Dr A. Kundu highlighted the importance of fodder for livestock. He also suggested it is possible to achieve doubling income from dairying if properly fed the dairy animals with fodder crops. The Director also gave away the fodder cutting to the farmers for cultivation in their field. Dr Zachariah George SMS from KVK Sippighat proposed the vote of thanks.
