The Chief Secretary, Andaman and Nicobar Administration, Mr Anindo Majumdar laid the foundation stone of the Administrative Building of Directorate of Rural Development, Panchayati Raj Institutions and Urban Local Bodies at Marine Hill, here today in the presence of Mr Udit Prakash Rai, Secretary (RD/Panchayat), Mr Tej Bahadur, SE, APWD and Mr Mahesh Kumar Gupta, AC(HQ).
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Secretary termed the Department of RD, PRIs and ULBs as a vital entity of the Andaman and Nicobar Administration that acts as an interface between the Administration and the Panchayati Raj Institutions. He hoped that the building would be completed before the stipulated time of one year. He further expressed that the building be made eco-friendly to be a model for the rest of the government buildings and PRI establishments in the Islands. He directed APWD to install LED lights and solar panels so as to mark it as a Green building.
Speaking on the significance of the department, he said that the Department of RD, PRIs should lead all major developmental activities of the line departments/Centrally Sponsored Schemes so as to have coordinated efforts that reach the ground.
Welcoming the gathering, Mr Udit Prakash Rai, Secretary (RD/Panchayat)/Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman pointed that the Department of RD, PRIs is the sole department that takes democracy to grass root level. He further expressed that since the UT of A&N Islands does not have a legislative assembly of its own, the function and role of PRIs in taking the word of common citizen forward is of paramount importance. With an administrative building of its own which was pending since a long time, the Secretary hoped that the department will have its own identity and shall work with more zeal and enthusiasm.
