Cycling expedition on World Environment Day

Port Blair
5 Jun 2017

To spread awareness about the 'World Environment Day' amongst the populace of A&N islands, a cycling rally from Shibpur to Port Blair was organised by the Headquarters Naval Component. The team comprising of six cyclists was led by Commander Jasneet S Sachdeva. During the 300 Km cycling expedition, the team of cyclists conducted Community Interaction Programmes with local populace at various places enroute, including at Kishorinagar, Mayabunder, Rangat, Kadamtala, Baratang and Jirkatang. Besides promoting this year's theme of World Environment Day – ‘Connect with Nature’ – the team interacted with a wide ranging audience including Marine Police, Department of Forests, Gram Panchayat Pradhans and the fishing community.
The primary aim of these interactions was to increase the level of awareness amongst the general population as to how they can contribute towards coastal security of the A&N islands. The team also educated people regarding Government of India's initiatives like ‘Swachh Bharat’, ‘Digital India’ and use of BHIM (Bharat Interface for Money) App. Further, due to low level of internet availability in remote areas, the team also explained the procedure of cashless transactions using *99# facility, which does not require a smartphone or internet connectivity for transferring funds. These initiatives have whole-heartedly been adopted by the Headquarters Andaman and Nicobar Command, wherein cashless transactions and sustainable waste management projects have been successfully implemented in a big way. The unique and maiden cycling expedition successfully culminated on 05 June 2017, on the occasion of World Environment Day.
