Dharna by CPI (M) at Tiranga Park

The Andaman and Nicobar State Organizing Committee of Communist Party of India (Marxist) staged a dharna at Tiranga Park on Tuesday. A public meeting was also organized by the party in the evening. Major among the local demands raised during the agitation include establishment of Legislative Assembly for these islands, check on population influx from mainland, inclusion of left-out categories in OBC list, grant of tribal status to Chotanagpuri (Ranchi) residents, scheduled caste status for Bengali settlers and others, steps for employment generation, issue of patta for those holding government land for a long period, repairs of Andaman Trunk Road, regular supply of cooking gas, registration of service of daily rated workers and grant of minimum wages @ Rs 18000/- per month to DRMs, linking agriculture to MNREGA with minimum 250 days of employment per year and minimum wages of Rs 500/- per day, construction of bridge between Chatham and Bambooflat, protection and cleaning of Kalpong river, check of price of essential commodities, explore possibility of establishing Atomic Power Station, implementation of Swaminathan Commission’s recommendations fixing minimum support price for farmers and grant of equal pay for equal work.
