Drivers’ crisis in Fire Services HQ

An emergency like situation has cropped up in the headquarters of the Andaman and Nicobar Police Fire Services after drivers of fire tenders boycotted their duties in the evening hours of Thursday. According to sources, the lone driver of the fire tender stationed at Marine Fire Station, a crucial station mandated to look after exigencies in the wharf area, was offloaded and directed to report to the headquarter station to perform duties in any of any fire call and to address the situation.
Sources said that drivers of the Fire department have been persistently demanding additional salary benefits at par with their counterparts in the Police Department to perform duties round the clock. As an internal arrangement, the drivers used to perform 24 shift duty instead of the 12 hours, which was abruptly revoked today. Opposing the decision, aggrieved drivers of the agency opted to boycott work. According to reports, senior officials of the Fire Department are closing monitoring the situation and a solution to the standoff is expected tomorrow. (EOIC)
