Villagers of Dundus Point in South Andaman under Ferrargunj Tehsil have demanded construction of a passenger shed at Chatham. In a petition signed by hundreds of villagers and submitted to the Deputy Commissioner of South Andaman along with a copy to the Chief Port Administrator, the residents narrated hardships being faced by them commuting between Dundus Point and Chatham. “There is no shed for the passengers at Chatham Jetty and daily commuters particularly school children are facing countless problems due to the deficiency. During summer, they wait under the scorching sun for hours while get drenched during rains waiting for the ferry boat. Most of the villagers here are fully dependent on ferry services for various works. However, repeated pleas to the authorities for construction of a passenger shed yielded no positive results till date. We’ve recently submitted a joint representation signed by villagers of Bambooflat and Dundus Point urging the Deputy Commissioner to look into the demand,” said some villagers speaking to the President of Andaman and Nicobar Media Federation, Mr K Ganeshan on Tuesday.
