Stung by criticism after The Echo of India exposed threat posed by a remote Panchayat in Middle Andaman to the nation’s dream of a clean India by 2019, the Panchayat authorities swung into action to ensure ‘Swachhta’ in all villages under its jurisdiction. As per reports, the Pradhan of the Panchayat arranged funds for hiring a vehicle and sanitary workers to dispose of garbage unattended for days in designated bins located in different hamlets in the region. The Panchayat body is reportedly taking further measures to sustain the cleanliness drive initiated under one of India’s most ambitious campaign in history.
EOI recently reported how villagers in Parnashala were bearing the brunt of insanitary conditions for the past two months. Though the Panchayat has provided Dustbins in atleast five places, non disposal for garbage accumulated in different areas had left the remote villagers harried. The Pradhan of Parnashala Panchayat, Ms. Saroni Minj then said that the Panchayat was not in a position to hire vehicles and appoint staff to dispose of the garbage from the dustbins due to shortage of funds. She, however, stated that the matter has been brought to the notice of the administration and necessary steps will be taken once funds are made available for the purpose.
