Farmers’ field day on organic cultivation held

A field day was conducted at ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (CIARI), Port Blair on organic cultivation of ginger and turmeric on Tuesday in collaboration with KVK, South Andaman and Directorate of Arecanut and Spices development Board (DASD) under the guidance of Dr. S. Dam Roy, Director, ICAR-CIARI. About 20 farmers from different parts of South Andaman attended the field day.
The farmers were welcomed by Dr. Nagesh Ram, PC, KVK. He explained the scope and methods for cultivation of ginger, turmeric and elephant foot yam in the Island. Dr. R. K. Gautam, In-Charge Head, Division of Horticulture and Forestry, ICAR-CIARI gave an overview of spices cultivation and significance of organic cultivation of ginger and turmeric in the Islands. Dr. K. Abirami, Scientist, ICAR-CIARI and Dr. V. Damodaran, ACTO, ICAR-CIARI, Coordinators of field day explained the production technologies under plantation based cropping system. Planting material of ginger, turmeric and elephant foot yam were distributed to farmers from South Andaman, Little Andaman and Middle Andaman for taking up front line demonstrations of organic cultivation of these crops in their fields. Demonstrations were done to explain the farmers about the cultivation technology of ginger, turmeric and elephant foot yam. Dr. L. B. Singh, SMS, KVK, proposed the vote of thanks.
