Former Zilla Parishad member from Kadamtala, Jyotirmay Bawali, has been arrested by the Police on allegations of insulting a Nicobar woman in public view. According to sources, the arrest was effected following investigations after a complaint was registered against the accused, who was booked under relevant sections of The Scheduled Castes and The Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Jyotirmay Bawali was reportedly produced before the Court on Thursday.
The incident dates back to around one and a half year when during a public meeting the accused reportedly used offensive language against the wife (Nicobari woman) of a social worker, Subroto Basu. A complaint was registered by the victim before the Police and the Tribal Council of Nicobar after which investigation into the incident was ordered. More details are awaited.
Repeated attempts to contact the SDPO Rangat, Mr. George Lalu, over his official landline number proved futile. (EOIC)
