GeM to ease procurement procedures: CS

A training programme on Government e-Marketplace (GeM) for smart sellers and Government buyers was held in the Conference Hall of DBRAIT here on Wednesday. The Chief Secretary, A & N Administration, Mr Anindo Majumdar was the chief guest of the function, which was organized by the A & N Administration in association with GeM, Ministry of Commerce, GoI. Addressing the gathering, the Chief Secretary said that GeM will ease the procurement procedure as the present procurement procedure is cumbersome, lengthy and lacks transparency. Hence, procurement by Government organisations has become a great challenge as many a time, materials are not available and delivery takes time. Online procurement through GeM is very easy, quick and transparent and it will surely improve things in the procurement of materials by any organization, the Chief Secretary said. He also said that GeM is a one-stop solution to the lengthy procedures of Govt. procurement.
The Chief Secretary further said that a big leap forward has come with the introduction of GeM as the portal will make things faster by harnessing the power of Information Technology. “Though we are facing the challenge of connectivity in these Islands, we are not deterred by it, rather we are overcoming the constraints”, he said expressing hope that the workshop will benefit all the participants, both buyers and sellers.
Welcoming the gathering, the Spl. Secretary (IT), Mr Utpal Sharma said that GeM will improve timely delivery of products and ensure timely payment. With the advancement in Information Technology and introduction of GeM, things will improve to a great extend, he said highlighting the objectives of the workshop. He also informed that similar workshops will also be arranged at North & Middle Andaman District and Nicobar District as well. The resource persons of the workshop, Mr Sanjay Joseph, Director GeM and Mr Udai Pratap Singh, Trainer DGS&D through PPT presentation threw light on the various aspects of GeM. He said that GeM is a one-stop solution to the lengthy procedure of Govt. procurement.
