Global Iodine Deficiency Disorder Prevention Day at Haddo

The Director of Health Service, A&N Administration observed Global Iodine Deficiency Disorder Prevention Day to highlight the importance of consumption of Iodised Salt for better health and prevention of iodine deficiency disorders  in a programme at Community Hall, Haddo on Saturday. Mr. Someshwar Rao, Ward Councillor, Haddo was the chief guest, while Dr. Shiv Shakar Singh, Senior Consultant, Medical Specialist, G. B. Pant Hospital was the main speaker. Mr. Someshwar Rao thanked the DHS, A&N Administration for organising such an educative event in their area, appealing to follow the wisdom imparted by the experts.
Dr. Shiv Shankar Singh said that iodine requirement for us is 150 to 200 micrograms daily, and is vital for the thyroid gland located in the front of our necks. He also said we can avoid disorders like goiter hypothyroidism, cretinism, deafness, dumbness, squint and mental retardation by using iodised salt, which is also necessary for development of healthy foetus. He advised the gathering to store iodine in tight containers to avoid loss.
Dr. Navin Govind, Deputy Director (HE & FW) spoke on the importance of Iodised salt, adding how iodine is important for secretion of thyroid hormones which are vital for normal growth, development and functioning of brain and body and that how iodine is essential component of our diet in small quantities.  Ms. Vasantha Devi, Health Education officer I/c proposed the vote of thanks.
