Green energy is govt’s focus: Rajnath Singh

The Union Government has undertaken an ambitious greening effort for the remote Andaman and Nicobar Islands and plans are on track to free these pristine islands from conventional sources of energy. Setting up Solar Photovoltaic (SPV) power plants in the city besides initiating steps to install LNG systems is aimed at replacing diesel-run generation units that currently lights up the habitable parts of the archipelago of over 572 islands in the Bay of Bengal, said Mr Rajnath Singh, Union Home Minister, after laying the foundation stone of one of the solar power plants of 17 MWp capacity (at Manglutan) on Friday. The Lieutenant Governor, Prof Jagdish Mukhi and Member of Parliament, Mr Bishnu Pada Ray, senior officials of the local government along with officials of NTPC were also present on the occasion.
The Union Government has identified two sites for installation of solar projects one each at Manglutan and Chidiyatapu in South Andaman with a capacity of about 25 MW — Manglutang having a 17 MW plant and Chidiyatapu an 8 MW plant.
After arriving here on Thursday, the Home Minister was received by the Lt Governor A&N Islands Prof. Jagdish Mukhi, Member of Parliament, Mr Bishnu Pada Ray, the Chief Secretary, Mr Anindo Majumdar, CINCAN, A&N Command, Vice Admiral Bimal Verma,  State President BJP, Mr Vishal Jolly, Adhyaksh ZPSA, Mr Jaydeep Kumar Dey, PBMC Chairperson, Mr B Eswar Rao, PBMC Councillors, senior officers of A&N Administration, BJP workers and general public. The Home Minister first paid tributes to the freedom fighters by placing a wreath at the Martyrs’ Column at Cellular Jail.
In the evening, the Home Minister held a meeting with the Lt. Governor, Member of Parliament and Senior Officers of the A&N Administration at Raj Niwas. Important issues pertaining to the development of A&N Islands were discussed and status of implementation of various schemes and projects was reviewed during the meeting. The Home Minister, Shri Rajnath Singh, directed the officials of Ministry of Home Affairs to take up important issues related to A&N Islands with the other Ministries of GoI in New Delhi for early solution of the issues.
