Inter-zonal school soccer tourney ends in grandeur

Three exciting matches marked the finals of the 4th Inter Zonal State Level School Football Knockout Tournament for U-14 (Boys) and U-17 (Boys & Girls) organized by the Department of Education in coordination with the Department of Sports & Youth Affairs at Netaji Stadium on Wednesday. The Chairperson of Municipal Council, Mr Indrapal Singh was the chief guest, while the Secretary, Education (i/c), Mr Sandip J Jaques, officials from different government departments and football lovers were also present on the occasion.
In the finals of U-14 (Boys) division, the team of Govt. Sr. Sec. School, Malacca beat GSSS Oral Katcha by five goals to nil, while in the U-17 (Boys), Govt. Model Sr. Sec. School, Hut Bay rout GSSS Wimberlygunj 9-0. In the Girls U-17 category, Govt. Model Sr. Sec. School, Hut Bay defeated GSSS Oral Katcha by five goals to two. Dignitaries present on the occasion gave away trophies and individual prizes to the winning and runners-up teams.
In his brief address, Mr Indrapal Singh, the Chairperson of Municipal Council, lauded the efforts of the administration for conducting the tournament to promote sports in these islands. “This is the first time, I witnessed a live soccer match and was enthused with the sportsman spirit displayed by the players. Such tournament helps discover new talents who can further be nurtured into finest players for the country,” he said assuring all possible support to promote sports in this territory.
Earlier welcoming the gathering, Mr Shubhankar Ghosh, DDE (Admn) introduced the team members with the chief guest, who handed over the match ball to the referee. Altogether, seven teams from different parts of these islands participated in the tournament.
