The Botanical Survey of India, Andaman & Nicobar Regional Centre, Port Blair, celebrated International Day for Biological Diversity on Monday at Dhanikhari Experimental Garden-cum-Arboretum, Nayashahar.
Inaugurating the function, Dr. Lal Ji Singh, Deputy Director & HOO, briefed about the objectives and activities of BSI in conservation of biodiversity. Dr. Singh said among all the units of BSI, Andaman & Nicobar Regional Centre holds the credits of covering one of the remote and insular floristic hotspots of the country. BSI garden is one of the excellence collections and have potential of ex-situ conservation of plant diversity in these islands, and BSI garden was  recognized not only in India but also at global level. On this occasion Dr. Singh also motivated the school children for more plantations and create awareness to conserve the biodiversity and keep clean and healthy environment.
A drawing competition for school students was organized. More than 80 students from various schools of Port Blair participated in the competition. All the scientists, officers, staff  members of the center and local people participated and showed keen interest for conservation of  biodiversity. The programme was conducted by Mr Gautam Anuj Ekka, Preservation Assistant and vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Sanjay Mishra, Scientist-B & Garden In-Charge.
