The State President of BJP, A & N Islands, Mr Vishal Jolly, in a letter to the Chief Secretary, has urged him to consider establishment of Seafood Export Industry in these islands. In the letter, Mr Jolly stated that fisheries and tourism are two potential sectors of A&N Islands to generate employment and revenue. “The administration has taken various steps to develop tourism sector but AN Fisheries is untapped and none of the AN fisher have become exporter so far. The main drawbacks of the fishermen here to enter in export arena is huge capital required to establish Export Units/ firm as per MPEDA approved design and fish is a highly perishable product for which faster logistics facility is needed,” said Mr Jolly. The administration should consider establishing Seafood Export Park like Special Economic Zone at Diglipur, Mayabunder, Rangat, Port Blair etc., and lease them to the fishermen Cooperative Society which holds nearly 80-100 fisherman shareholders to share the benefit equally. The Diglipur Airport project is under progress, which will help handling fish cargo and its early transportation. Further, developing Seafood Export Park in fishing based islands will generate self-employment to fisher youths/ Unemployed youths and it will attract foreign exchange to achieve inclusive economic growth in A&N Islands, he added.
