A massive protest was held a massive protest demanding implementation of the Inner Line Permit system per the orders of the Apex Court and withdrawal of the proposed property tax by the Port Blair Municipal Council imposed on self occupied residential buildings in the city on Tuesday. Organized by the Local Born Association (LBA) led by its President, Dr Prem Kishen, the rally received overwhelming support from other social organizations like the Andaman Moplah Association, the Andhra Association, Ranchi Association, Diglipur Settlers Association and the Island Development Organization.
Hundreds of people from all ages participated in the rally which started from Netaji Club and culminated at the same venue before passing through vantage parts of the city. The protestors demanded implementation of Inner Line Permit system and withdrawal of property tax on self-occupied residential buildings. Speaking to this Correspondent, a member of LBA said that even after 15 years since the Apex Court of the country accepted Prof. Shekhar Singh’s Commission report and directed the Andaman and Nicobar Administration implement the Inner Line Permit System within three months vide its judgment passed in May 2002, the Supreme Court’s order has not yet been implemented due to political pressure.
Imposition of property tax on self occupied residential house is also acceptable to the islanders and must be withdrawn. The irony is that the property tax of big business houses have been reduced by about hundred times from the existing tax rate and for common man it has been increased by ten times. If the tax from self occupied residential house is not withdrawn, we will have no option but to call for Andaman Bandh and continue the protest till the draconian rules are withdrawn, the member added.
