Mahila Kisan Diwas celebrated at KVK PB

Mahila Kisan Diwas was celebrated under the theme “Role of Women in Agriculture and Women Empowerment” by ICAR-KrishiVigyan Kendra, South Andaman in association with Social Science Section, CIARI and NCUI, Garacharma, at its Sippighat complex on Monday.
Successful farmwomen viz Smt Chellamal, Rebika, Jyotshna and Kamala expressed their happiness on behalf of women participants for recognizing women farmers by dedicating MKD. They also shared their experience and livelihood support received after taking agriculture as a vocation. They stressed upon market linkage.
In his address, Dr. B Gangaiah, Director (I/C),lauded the effort of the KVK in transforming the lives of women as successful entrepreneurs. He also stressed on the need to implement small drudgery reducing implements and climate resilient technologies for livelihood and nutritional security. He cited many examples set by the women folk towards establishing entrepreneurship in agriculture sector.  Dr. Nagesh Ram, Sr. Scientist and Head, ICAR-KVK, South Andaman and Convenor of MKD spoke about the importance of the Day and urged the farm women to harvest the maximum benefits from the new technologies developed by the Research Institute for doubling their farm income.
Dr. S.K. Zamir Ahmed, Principal Scientist and, In-charge, Social Science Section and Convenor of MKD deliberated on the role of women in agriculture and allied sectors.He highlighted on the technologies adopted and popularized for income enhancement through participatory mode viz. IFS, BBFS, Pekin Duck under backyard, Satellite Fish Nursery, Seed Village Concept, Homestead based IFS. He stressed upon market avenues in agricultural produce for maximizing the benefits to the stakeholders and also the Island farmers for which Andaman & Nicobar Administration is taking concerted initiative. He also pointed out the availability of Sunday Market at Junglighat which his giving avenue to small entrepreneurs to showcase and sell their produce to the diverse group and earn livelihood. Mr S.N. Singh, Project Officer, NCUI, Garacharma, Port Blair expressed his happiness on the active role of the KVK and CIARI for facilitating the farmwomen through training and demonstration ensuring socio-economic upliftmentin agriculture and allied fields.

Kirubasankar HOD (I/C) Fisheries were the other speakers during the Occasion.  As a part of MKD, various Self Help Groups viz. Miracle, Nethaji, Evergreen, Pragati, Mithua have exhibited their products and a competition on drawing, debate and essay writing were the highlights of the programme, wherein the women folks participated with lots of zeal and enthusiasm. The winners were suitably awarded during the programme.
Around 156 farmwomen representing from different cluster of villages namely Chouldari, Ferrargunj, Guptapara, Manglutan, Gopal Nagar, Port Mout, Calicut, Rangachang, Wandoor, Dolly Gunj, Sippighat and Garacharma of South Andaman participated.
The programme was coordinated by a team comprising of Dr. L.B. Singh, Dr. Jaya Kumarvaradan, Dr. V.K.Pandey, Dr. Harapriya Nayak, Er. B.K. Nanda, Dr. Zachariah George, Shri N. Bommayasamy as Co-convenors of MKD. At the outset Dr. L. B. Singh welcomed the gathering and Dr.HarapriyaNayak proposed vote of thanks.
