Major landslide at Dollygunj Industrial Estate, authorities assure remedial measures

Incessant rains caused a major landslide at Industrial Estate, Dollygunj  at the rear boundary of M/s Echo Printing Press on Tuesday. Tonnes of earth subsided in the incident leaving the industrial building in a vulnerable state. Senior officials of the administration promptly visited the spot and assured to initiate necessary remedial measures. The mudslide occurred at around 3.40 am in the morning today. The manager of M/s Echo Printing Press immediately informed about the incident to the senior management after which the authorities swung into action. The Secretary of Industries Department, Deputy Commissioner of South Andaman, Director of Industries and officials from the Andaman Public Works Department took stock of the situation. After reviewing the situation, the APWD initiated steps to temporarily secure the area from further mudslides. The Secretary of Industries also assured to initiate procedures to permanently secure the building from mudslides. The President of Andaman and Nicobar Media Federation, Mr K Ganeshan, also visited the spot and reportedly wrote to the senior brass of the administration about the incident.
The Echo of India, Port Blair, commissioned the island’s first Web Offset Printing Unit in July 2011. The then Chief Secretary of the UT Administration, Mr. Shakti Sinha released the first copy of the English daily newspaper, printed locally in the printing unit after the Industries Department allotted space. The automatic web offset printing press can print 20,000 copies or 1,60,000 pages per hour.   The unit prints three premium dailies, The Echo of India (English), Info India (Hindi) and Arthik Lipi (Bengali) and is circulated among readers right from Campbell Bay in the southern group to Diglipur in the North Andaman region. Besides, the publication has distribution chains in some major cities of the country, like Kolkata, New Delhi, Guwahati and other  North Eastern States etc.
