Port Blair
29 Mar 2017

On Tuesday late in the evening, the Andaman and Nicobar Command received a request from Deputy Director, Directorate of Health Services Port Blair, for medical evacuation of  Smt Susana, wife of  John Kenady. The pregnant patient aged 31 years is a resident of Japan Tekri at Katchal Island. She was suffering from acute breathing difficulty and irregular pulse, requiring urgent medical evacuation to Port Blair. The Andaman and Nicobar Command  was requested to facilitate her admission to GB Pant Hospital at Port Blair.
Immediately, an MI 17 V5 helicopter was launched by Air Force Station Carnic. The helicopter undertook a night landing at Katchal at 10:46 pm with the help of improvised lighting at Katchal helipad. The patient along with a medical attendant and two civilians were evacuated in the same night from Katchal to Air Force Station Carnic. They were immediately shifted to a waiting Dornier aircraft, which brought them to Port Blair after midnight at about 01:00 am on  March 29. Additional arrangements of oxygen made at the Air Force Station Carnic despite short notice at night played a crucial role in saving the life of the patient in this medical evacuation as the oxygen supply during the transport had become critically low. On arrival at INS Utkrosh at Port Blair, Smt Susana was shifted to GB Pant Hospital for further treatment.
