The Andaman & Nicobar Administration had entered into a Power Purchase Agreement with M/s Suryachkara Power Corporation Ltd. in the year 1997, for purchase of 20 MW power. The 15 years agreement with the company will expire on 31st March, 2018.
In compliance of the direction of Supreme Court, Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission by an order Dt. 13.01.2017, adjudicated Rs 9.67 crores as amount payable by Suryachkara Power Corporation Ltd., to A&N Administration. Further, due to its poor operational performance in FY 2016-17, a penalty of Rs 2.30 crores was also imposed on the Company in accordance to the Power Purchase Agreement by Electricity department. Owing to such high outstanding liability, M/s Suryachkara Power Corporation Ltd, was informed to clear its dues or furnish Bank Guarantee of equivalent amount, to continue the payment of monthly tariff bill. Since the company failed to clear the said dues, the department commenced the realization of dues on account of penalty through the monthly tariff bill.
The company's employees on July 20 have abstained from work owing to non-payment of their salary and benefits dues to them by the Company. The forced closure of 20MW Power Plant at Bambooflat is due to the internal problems prevailing between the employees and the management and is solely attributable to the Company. The payment of salary and other benefits to the employees is the sole responsibility of M/s Suryachkara Power Corporation Ltd. The release is being issued to make the general public aware of the fact of the matter and to put rest to the unfounded rumors spread by miscreants who are trying to portray a misleading picture of Electricity Department & Andaman and Nicobar Administration, said the Superintending Engineer of Electricity Department in a release.
