Multiple raids by CBI over corruption charges in procurement of medicines

Sleuths from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) swooped down at multiple places in the city including the office and residence of Director of Health Services, Dr Shipra Paul on Thursday and conducted surprise checks of medicines and supply records besides making discrete inquiries about the manner in which the medicine supply contracts were executed by the Health Department. According to source, the CBI officials seized many official documents from the office and residence of Dr Paul during the raids which was conducted for around three hours.
According to reports, the raids were led by the SP, CBI, Mr Santanu following complaints of large scale corruption in procurement of medicines for different hospitals in these islands. Sources that procurement of medicines by the Health Department came under the scanner of the investigating agencies after it received several complaints of manipulation in the procurement procedures. The agency is reportedly investigating procurement amounting to crores of rupees in the last few years. The raids were conducted at five places including the office, residence of the Health Director and some private pharmacy stores in the city, according to sources. More details are awaited.
