Observance of Fire Service Week concludes

Various activities were conducted as part of the Fire Service Week from April 14 to enhance public awareness about the necessity of minimizing losses due to fire, various community outreach activities have been undertaken during the week long programme. A debate competition amongst the students of Govt. Colleges and drawing competition for School children from Class-I to VIIIth std. in different categories was organized on the theme “ Fireman – Your Partner for Saving Life and Property”.  Besides, to emphasise on fire safety, mass awareness programmes by conducting lectures and live demonstrations on “Fire Prevention & Fire Extinction” at public places, in the premises of Secretariat, Deptt. of Industries, Middle Point, Port Blair, STS Workshop unit at Ferrargunj, Electricity site Office at Prothrapur and various Govt./Private Schools in South Andaman was undertaken.  Simultaneously, Fire Prevention hand-outs have been distributed to members of the public during the programmes. The salient features of evacuation drills, implementation of fire safety order, Do’s and Don’ts in case of natural and manmade disaster and how to use fire extinguisher etc. was of fire safety drills.  The activities have been initiated under the guidance of Mr B Saigal, Dy. Superintendent of Police (Fire Service), A&N Islands.
During the week, the Fire Service Training Centre has made efforts to spread awareness by screening films at public gathering places at Marina Park, Bathubasthi junction, Tiranga Park, Dairy Farm etc. Large numbers of public have witnessed the films on fire prevention and shared their views with the Fire Service Officer and staff and cleared their doubts on various aspects.  Slides on Do’s and Don’ts, good housekeeping is also exhibited in the Cinema Halls in Port Blair from 14th April, 2017 onwards for creating public awareness.
The valedictory function of the Fire Service Week was held on Friday at the Fire Service (HQs). Mr Atmaram V. Deshpande, Superintendent of Police (Fire Service) was the chief guest on the occasion. He gave away prizes to the winners in various categories to the participants.  A live demonstration on fire fighting operation and rescue operation with disaster management machineries was presented by the Fire Service personnel in Fire Brigade (HQs). The large gathering of School/College students, Teachers, Parents, general public, staff from private establishments etc. attended the function and witnessed the demonstration which was widely appreciated.
