Painting contest on water conservation by CGWB draws enthusiastic response

The 8th State/UT level painting competition on “Water conservation” by school children from all around the A&N Islands was conducted in the auditorium of Jawahar Lal Rajakiya Mahavidyalaya at Port Blair on Sunday. The competition was organised by Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), the apex ground water organisation under Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation as a mark of national campaign in view of extreme crisis of fresh water resources. The Union Ministry of Water Resources, RD&GR had taken a noble plan to promulgate the campaign though National painting competition on the theme conservation of water using the school children as the brand ambassador. It is also envisaged that the slogan of saving water and its conservation in the wake of severe crisis of the precious resources all over the country could be further ventilated through the thoughtful drawings by the budding citizen on the canvas.
The selection of the students is done in three tiers i.e. 1) the school level competition of the students of 6th ,7th and 8th standards in the schools from  all over the islands where from 50 students were selected   2) State/UT level competition at Port Blair to pick up best three students for the national meet and 3.the national competition in New Delhi to be held on March 26 at A.P.Shinde Auditorium of ICAR at Pusa,New Delhi.The selection in School,State and National competition is done by a distinguished jury board constituted by the experts from the field of art and culture and science.
In the contest, M.Divy Darshinini of Sagritara  School, Prem Nagar,Port Blair has bagged the first prize while Suvam Halder  of Govt. Model Senior Secondary School , Sita Nagar; Diglipur, North Andaman, and Ankit Halder of Govt. Senior Secondary School, Subashgram, Diglipur, North Andaman were adjudged as second and third prize winning candidates. Cash prizes worth Rs.5000, 3000  and 2000  and a merit certificate were given away to the first three award winners. Besides, ten consolation prizes worth Rs.1000  each were also distributed amongst the other successful candidates from all over the islands. Two consolation prizes were won by Ms.Swati Trivedi and Ms. Indrani from Govt. Sr.Secondary School of remote Campbell Bat,Great Nicobar Island. Mr Arava Gopi Krishna, Secretary(Education),A&N Admn. Graced the prize distribution function as Chief Guest while Dr. N,Francis Xavier,Principal, JNRM,Port Blair, Mr A.Subramanium, Superintending  Engineer, APWD were present  as guest of honour. In the morning the inauguration was done by Mr Sarat Chandran,DEO(Science) and Principal Model School Port Blair as a Special Guest. Mr Amlanjyoti Kar, Regional Director(i/c) ,Central Ground Water Board(cgwb) and eminent water expert of the Islands, presided over the function and delivered welcome address while Mr D.G.Dasdidar, Scientist-D,CGWB offered the vote of thanks. Mr A.N Chowdhury, Scientist-CGWB was the anchor in the programme and Dr.A.K.Sinha, Scientist, CGWB was also present on the occasion. The dignitaries stressed the usefulness of organising such mass awareness campaign using School children especially in the islands of Andaman and Nicobar where fresh water is a scarce and endangered resources. They also congratulated the efforts made by CGWB in spreading the message of water conservation and successful organization of the noble effort. The dignitaries also wished the best efforts by the students, going to attend the National meet at New Delhi.
