Pradesh Congress Committee president Kuldeep Rai Sharma has demanded review and withdrawal of the decision of the Municipal Council to levy parking charges on vehicle owners in different parking lots across the city in public interest. In a letter, Mr Sharma claimed that the party has received several complaints regarding exorbitant charging of parking fee by agencies who have been  awarded parking lots  in auction by the Council. “To prevent traffic anarchy in the town, Port Blair Municipal Council developed  parking  places at different locations in the municipal area and the general  public visiting the markets  use to park their vehicles in  the nearest parking places. However,   the present Council handed over all these parking places to private agencies by conducting public auction and  the agencies are now levying exorbitant  parking fee on vehicles.  In the absence of shopping  complexes like in mainland,  people here have to visit different markets for their requirements and in the present situation, vehicle owners are forced to pay multiple fee for parking their vehicle in different lots. People reluctant to pay such exorbitant charges park their vehicles along with roadsides causing traffic disorder,” said Mr Sharma justifying his demand.
