Seminar on ‘Women Empowerment’ held

The Lt. Governor, A&N Islands, Prof Jagdish Mukhi has called upon the people and the society to ensure that the rights of women are protected; for empowering the women of the country in the right manner. He urged the people to encourage women in all their endeavors,including the decision making process. He said this while speaking as the chief guest of the valedictory function of the seminar on ‘Women Empowerment’ organized by A&N State Social Welfare Board, in association with the Hindi Sahitya Kala Parishad and Chetna (a Socio Cultural Organisation), Port Blair at the Hindi Sahitya Kala Parishad Hall here on Monday. The First Lady of the Islands, Smti Prem Mukhi presided over the function.
The seminar was also attended by Smt Rupa Ray, Mr Vishal Jolly, state president, BJP, PBMC Chairperson, Mr B Eswar Rao, Swami Shuddhananda Saraswati of Chinmaya Mission, Port Blair, Chairperson, SSWB, Dr Poonam Arora and Secretary Social Welfare, Smti Rashmi Singh, among others.
Dr Guru Charan Singh, Professor & Head, Hindi Deptt. of  Shanti Prasad Jain College, Sasaram and Dr Arun Kant Singh, Professor & Head, Political Science Deptt of Veer Kunwar Singh Vishwa Vidyalay, Aara, were the resource persons of the technical session.
Turning to the status of woman in these Islands, the Lt Governor said, women are executing their duties with utmost sincerity and responsibility by holding different portfolio in civic bodies, including Panchayati Raj Institutions in these Islands. The Lt Governor said, these Islands are better examples of women empowerment where most of the senior officers in Police Department are women and headed by a lady Director General of Police.
Speaking on the occasion, the First Lady congratulated the SSWB, Hindi Sahitya Kala Parishad and the Social and Cultural Organization – Chetna for organizing the seminar for creating awareness about women empowerment, their rights and duties. Lauding the contribution of SSWB towards the welfare of the women of the Islands, she said the Board is making efforts in percolating the pledge of the Prime Minister – “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao”. “The family, society and country will progress only when our daughters are safe and educated”, she said.
“An educated woman will take forward the families”, she said and urged everyone to give due respect to the ladies in the family. She also stated that today, woman are doing very good in all spheres of life and have made their presence felt in all capacities, such as politics and other jobs - be it on water, land or sky.
The Secretary, Social Welfare, Smti Rashmi Singh informed the gathering about the efforts of the A&N Administration towards women empowerment. The SSWB Chairperson, Dr Poonam Arora, stressed on involving women in all decision making process. Quoting Swami Vivekananda, she said, the best thing one can do for the progress of women,  is to educate them and urged everyone to encourage women in all their endeavors.
Welcoming the gathering, the president, HSKP, Mr RP Singh informed about the various activities carried out by the Parishad throughout the year, for propagation of Hindi.
The resource persons of the seminar from mainland Dr Guru Charan Singh and Dr Arun Kant Singh highlighted the contributions of women in the country, since time immemorial. The inmates of Balika Niketan presented a song befitting the occasion of Rakhi. They along with the inmates of Pranab Kanya Sangh also tied Rakhies to the Lt Governor and the First Lady of the Islands, who in turn gave them sweets and gifts. The Patron, Chetna, Dr RN Rath, proposed the vote of thanks.
