Seminar on women empowerment gets underway at JNRM

A two-day national seminar on “Empowerment of Women through Skill Development and Training: A Critical analysis of Government Policies and Programmes with special reference to Andaman & Nicobar Islands” organized by the Department of Home science in collaboration with the National Commission for Women (NCW), Government of India, New Delhi got underway on Friday at JNRM here.
Inaugurating the seminar, Smt. Tanvi Garg, Secretary (Education) appreciated the department of Homescience for organising such an important event which is the need of the hour. She felt that the women empowerment and development should go hand in hand and underscored the necessity of Skill development for bringing the women into the mainstream, on par with their male counterparts. She desired that the proceedings of the seminar should reach the grassroot level and in turn, should impact on  the many stakeholders, especially women in rural and tribal areas. She also felt that JNRM should become a resource centre for studies on women empowerment, as suggested by Professor K.S Pushpa, one of the speakers.
The guest of honour, Dr.V.Ponraj, Scientist “G”, Scientific Adviser to late Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, former President of India,  urged the need for women empowerment in all spheres of life including  home, which is the best place where skills are inculcated in an unforced manner.  He also shared the vision of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam on various women development projects with special reference to PURA. The special Guest Dr.R.Murugesan, Professor & Head / Director, National Institute of Rural Development, Govt of India, said that the entire livelihood missions of government of India and state governments like NRLM, SRLM, SHG etc have direct impact on skill development based employment and reduce the migration. He volunteered to help the Islands through developing a suitable economic model based on the available raw materials through optimum use by employing suitable skill sets. The special guest Dr.K.S.Pushpa, Professor, Department of Home Science, Gandhigram Rural Institute, felt that the Home Science Department of JNRM should become a Resource cepntre for women which caters to the need of filling skill gap in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Earlier Dr N Francis Xavier, Principal JNRM welcomed the gathering and assured to take the measures and suggestion of the seminar for implementation under Skill India programme. Mr K.Venkatesan, Seminar Director and Convener updated the gathering about the motto of the seminar and apprised the audience about the participants ranging from Government to Non Government, Academic to Policy makers, SHGs to entrepreneurs etc and proposed vote of thanks. Altogether around 30 experts are presenting papers and 120 participants are taking part in the programme.
