Senior tribal welfare officer on road rampage, kills two

Tuesday proved fatal for two poor persons returning home after a day’s of hard-work when a tribal welfare officer lost control over his vehicle. It was at around 10 pm when the official on a Ford vehicle dashed a pedestrian near RSN Godown at Dollyunj and fled from the spot. In less than ten minutes, the errant motorist rammed his vehicle on another person at Bhatu Basti. Both the private workers identified as Ajith Kumar, 60, and Safikul Islam, succumbed to injuries at GB Pant Hospital at around 2 am yesterday, informed sources.
The rampage, however, triggered a serious law and order situation at Bhatu Basti when angry people present at the mishap site tried to set the vehicle on fire. Vehicles of Police Department and Fire services were attacked. Forces called for reinforcement and the situation was brought under control.
The police have registered a case under section 279/304 read with section 132/134/187/184/185 of MV Act. The accused, Dr Pronob Kumar Sircar, Tribal Welfare Officer of the Andaman Adim Janjati Vikas Samity was produced before the Court on Wednesday and sent to judicial custody till June 2.
