Snake bites killed 15 in isles since 2014

At least 15 deaths have been reported in Andaman and Nicobar Islands due to snake bites from 2014 to 2016. Across the country, venomous snakes killed 1127 persons in 2014, 1219 in 2015 and 1064 in the year 2016, the Minister of State (Health and Family Welfare), Smt Anupriya Patel informed Lok Sabha on Friday. The Central Government provides assistance to the States for strengthening of health infrastructure under the National Health Mission. This facilitates treatment for various diseases and emergencies including snake bites. Health being a State subject, the Ministry has asked the States to procure anti-snake venom serum under National Health Mission after reflecting the same in their annual PIP for approvals. The States have also been asked to organise training of health professional on animal bite management and ID route of anti-rabies vaccination, IEC activities for community awareness on dos’ and don’ts in the event of animal bite, strengthening surveillance of human rabies and strengthening lab diagnostics for rabies, the Minister said.
