STA notifies bus fare hike

In a move that is likely to burden the pockets of common man mainly after GST comes into force on July 1, 2017, the State Transport Authority has notified hike for stage carrier busses i.e. local, ordinary express buses, semi-deluxe express, deluxe express, air conditioned express and air conditioned  local buses plying in the Andaman and  Nicobar Islands. The STA, vide a notification issued in the month of  May this year, the minimum fare has been revised to Rs 8 for 0-2 kms, Rs 10 for 4-6 kms, Rs 24 for 26-28 km and the maximum fare has been revised to Rs 229 for 348 to 350 km for local buses. Fare in ordinary express buses has also been revised to Rs 90, Rs 110, Rs 160, Rs 180, Rs 220, Rs 280, Rs 290 and Rs 140 for travel  to Baratang, Kadamtala, Rangat, Nimbudera, Mayabunder, Diglipur, Aerial Bay and from Bambooflat to Rangat respectively. Fares on semi-deluxe, deluxe and air-conditioned express buses have also been revised with minimum fares fixed at Rs 110, Rs 120 and Rs 140  respectively. The maximum fares on these buses have been hiked to Rs 350 , Rs 385 and Rs 460 respectively.
The STA has also notified the concessional fares for children, students, senior citizens, freedom fighters and handicapped persons. No fare shall be charged in ordinary/expresses services from children up to 5 years, freedom fighters in possession of valid identity cards and handicapped persons with at least 40% disability and senior citizens above 80 years. Students of various educational institutions will be charged a minimum fare of Rs 8 for 0-16 kms and beyond 16 km, 50 percent of fare shall be charged. 50% concession on the prevailing fare in express services has also been notified for the students in possession of valid identity cards. Senior citizens above 60 and up to 80 years have been extended with 50% of concession on the prevailing fares in ordinary as well as express buses subject to ordinary service buses.
