The Lt. Governor, A & N Islands, Admiral D.K. Joshi, PVSM, AVSM, YSM, NM, VSM (Retd.) accompanied by the First Lady of A & N Islands Smt. Chitra Joshi along with Secretary to LG Dr. Ajay Kumar Singla, visited Chowra & Kamorta on their first visit to the Southern Group of Islands.
At Chowra Island, a warm welcome was accorded by the members of Tribal Council, Chowra. Thereafter, a meeting was held with the Tribal leaders and tribal populace wherein, the Lt. Governor heard their grievances which was mainly related to the network connectivity and shipping services in the Island. The Lt. Governor assured that the issues will be addressed expeditiously.
Later, the Lt. Governor and his entourage proceeded to Kamorta Island where he was received by the Deputy Commissioner, Nicobars Mr . Awanish Kumar along with AC Nancowrie, Mr Nishant Bodh and other local heads of offices and members of Tribal Council.
Immediately after his arrival, the Lt. Governor visited the Govt. Sr. Sec. School, Goal Tekrey where he inspected the school infrastructure and interacted with the students & teachers and lauded the school authorities for their good work. The Lt. Governor then proceeded to the APWD guest house where he was given the guard of honour by the contingent of A&N Police.
The Lt. Governor also visited the Anganwadi Centre, Kamorta and interacted with the Anganwadi workers and kids and heard their submissions and assured them for its early resolution. Thereafter, the Lt. Governor visited the CHC Nancowrie and inspected the medical facilities available there and interacted with the doctors and the in-patients. He expressed his satisfaction over the facilities and performance of the hospital and praised the efforts of the Medical Officer-in-charge Dr. Ramya.
In the evening, the Lt. Governor held a meeting with the local heads of offices, members of Tribal Council and Village Headmen. The tribal leaders appraised him about the long pending issues in the Islands like regular shipping services, uninterrupted power supply, village roads, BSNL connectivity, regular visit of super specialists at CHC, Nancowrie etc. The Lt. Governor directed the concerned Departments for their early resolution and appealed to the Tribal leaders to shed their fears and cooperate with the Administration, which is always committed towards making the lives of tribal populace better. He further asked the Administration to focus on nurturing the strengths of the Islands viz. sports, fisheries, handicrafts, etc.
