Swimming contest by Forest Dept. draws huge response

The Department of Environment and Forest, in association with the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs organized a swimming contest on Wednesday as part of the 68th Van Mahotsava celebration.  The Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Mr Tarun Commar inaugurated the competition as the chief guest, while Smt Tanvi Garg, Secretary (Sports) was the guest of honour. The Director of Sports, Assistant Director of Sports, Dr Chandra Sekhar, swimming coach, Mr V Selvam were also present on the occasion.
In his address, Mr Commar said that swimming is not only a game but it is also a health education. It is one of the best therapies  for various ailments and helps maintain a healthy lifestyle. Though the Andaman and Nicobar Islands has 90 percent of green cover, the Forest Department conducts tree planting drives at regular intervals across the islands to preserve the environment, he said. He also wished the organising committee to continue their good work in future too
The contest was conducted in several categories including 50 mtr freestyle men open (heat 1,2,3,4,5,6), 50 mtr  freestyle under  boys (heat.1,2,3), 50 mtr back stroke open women, 100 mtr backstroke men open (heat 1,2), 100 mtr backstroke open women, 100 mtr freestyle open (heat 1,2,3), 50 mtr and back stroke under 16 boys.
